I recently put a challenge out to all of my facebook friends and thought I would add it to my blog as well. I am asking each of you who can to put some travel sized items into a ziploc bag and mail them to me to give to people in Ethiopia. I got the idea from a family who went there to pick up their children. They planned to give them to the street people (the program was Jesus on the Streets) but it did not work out that way. They ended up giving them to the people who worked in the hotel and the response was amazing. It was likened to one of us being handed a check for ten thousand dollars!!!!!!! I would like to give these to my fellow helpers at the orphanage and family I will be living with. We have so much in this country and they have so little. I am going to put a small list here to give you an idea but I am sure you will have more. Feel free to add items as long as they are not medicinal. I do not want to be responsible if someone misuses medicine.
1. shampoo
2. conditioner
3. body wash
4. q-tips
5. cotton balls
6. toothpaste/toothbrush
7. comb
8. band-aids
9. neosporin (medicinal but not taken internally so I think okay)
10. nail files
11. deoderant
12. hand lotion
13. kleenex
14. baby wipes
You get the picture. Please contact me for my address and I will be happy to send it to you. (I am sure you understand why I do not wish to publish it)
I have some other items already planned to take with me. Some I have already purchased (bubbles, clothes) and others will be donated before I go (books) I am making doilies to take to the woman as welcoming gifts. I plan on getting a light weight book on Chicago to take with me and I am making a photo book of my family to show them. I had an amazing idea today. I was trying to think of other local things to take with me and I thought wouldn't it be fun to take snow. I then remembered years ago there was an instant snow product sold at the holidays. I did some research and just spoke with a gentleman about insta-snow. I called to find out if it would work with any water (I was not sure if bottled water would interfere with how it worked or stream or pumped water - they do not!!!!!) So I will be ordering some of that. I will be sure to have my camera there that day!!!!! I will also get some kind of candy to take with as well. I am waiting on my orphanage assignment to see how many children and staff there are as well as my housing assignment to see how many family members I will be living with. I am getting so excited!!!!!! Please remeber travel size as space in my suitcase is becoming limited. Thank you again for all of your continued support.
